Reimagining litter bins across Patchway

This autumn, Patchway Town Council will initiate a programme to reimagine its litter bin provision for residents across the town. The Council is exploring the current provision of litter bins across the town in terms of quantity, quality, location, time required to empty bins, and consideration of the wider street environment.

Patchway Town Council currently has 58 litter bins, South Gloucestershire Council have approximately 50 litter bins and there is duplication at a number of locations with a wide variety of sizes and quality.

Many of the Patchway Town Council bins are small, red lamppost attached versions which fill quickly and are the target of more regular vandalism. Other older, larger bins can be abused through fly-tipping due to the large aperture.

The Council is engaging closely with South Gloucestershire Council to ensure a programme that can deliver a good service for residents, better quality and located litter bins, and deliver better value.

Patchway Town Council will fund this programme through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) raised via South Gloucestershire Council planning applications in Patchway in 2024 – 2025. CIL is used to support the development of a parish council’s area by funding the provision, improvement, replacement, operation or maintenance of infrastructure.

Did you know?

·         All litter bins across Patchway can accept dog waste, though the preference is for dog-owners to take waste home wherever possible.

·         Litter bins are not for household waste, garden waste, cat litter or fly-tipping. The Council will investigate and report these issues when they occur. Residents using public litter bins for these reasons ultimately lead to increased costs for all residents through clearance costs and waste charges.

·         Fly-tipping is a criminal offence with an unlimited fine if prosecuted criminally, and/or up to 5 years imprisonment. Patchway Town Council actively reports fly-tipping issues and shares evidence gained with South Gloucestershire Council Enforcement Team from fly-tipped waste.

The Council will share regular updates on the programme as it is rolled out. Residents can feedback your thoughts on Patchway Town Council litter bin locations by emailing office@patchwaytowncouncil.gov.uk.
